Default Exhaust putts in idle.

Sometimes, noticibly on a hotter day, my car will start to make a putting sound coming from the muffler when I stop at a light. I notice that when I put it in nuteral and give it some gas it stops the putting sound. Any ideas what could be wrong? By the way the car is a 1992 Honda Civic DX hatchback. (manual)

need to check throughout the exhaust system for a leak - more than likely there is a hole in the muffer or around the connections to the exhaust pipe and/or tailpipe.

mass airflow sensor. Its on your intake and it regulates the airflow into your throttle body.

The sensor is an unlikely cause of this problem. That is, if his airflow sesor was going bad, he'd be having engine problems, too, due to incorrect air/fuel ratios. Also, the problem would occur all the time. As it is, it's a putting sound isolated in the exhaust on hot days. That mean's its probably an exhaust problem.

Also, it's "MAF" and it doesn't regulate airflow, it just measures it.

when my "maf" was messed up it only made an odd sound at stops. I was just trying to give my opinion of what it could be. SORRY
