hey i just bought a 1998 civic DX so i guess im a newbie the car has 156k and it needs some motor work. The motor runs like **** and it has an extreamly bad knocking sound and it stalls after it warms up. If i take thespark plugfor the4th cly it runs better and stays running but surges.I was wondering if anyone would kno what kinda engine it has in it. does anyone have any sugestions to if i should rebuild that motor or just buy a after market or a junkyard engine. i bought the car for $130 so i dont mind spending alittle bit of money on it!

you have a d16y7 engine. D series engine are pretty cheap, you might find a pretty good one locally for $300.

Do you retrieve any CEL codes that might be informative?

If your car runs, take it to your local AutoZone. For free, they will use a scan tool to retrieve any stored Check Engine Light (CEL) codes. My wild guess would be that you have a problem with your distributor, causing your timing to be off. Any retrieved CEL codes might help. Post any codes that Autozone finds.

There is an alternate way to retrieve CEL codes that does not require a scan tool (read information in link below). You should be able to do this yourself at home. The SCS service connector in my 1997 Civic DX is located behind the passenger-side kick panel.
