Default A/C problems

When I engage the a/c button I get a real solid knocking noise on the left side of the block (while in driver seat). I took it to a dealer and after they ran tests they said that the compressor is basically dead and that I should replace the entire system. They then promptly reqested for $1200 to start the work! I am hoping for some information or guidance on if this would be a project do able myself! If not, what this type of repair should run as this seems to be a high estimate after talking to a couple of other shops.

compressor is dead=replace the entire system?

that's a bunch of BS

if the compressor is bad, replace the compressor. Go somewhere else.

Check that the condenser fan works. A bad fan will cause a lot of pressure to build up and likely some distressed noises from the compressor.

If the compressor is coming apart inside, it will have sent bits of metal out through the lines particularly into the condenser. So the condenser should be replaced (they are very hard to clean out) and the rest of the system cleaned out, and a new receiver-drier is of course part of any major repair. That really only leaves the evaporator as the only major part short of replacing the entire system. If there's any debris from the blown compressor left in the system, it will come around and ruin the new one and you have to do it all over again. Slapping a new compressor on without doing the rest is just going to be a waste of a new compressor.

Drive on the freeway and turn on the AC. Do you have cold air? If so, the fan is faulty.

Default Faulty

Whenever I am driving freeway/city I do get cold air when I initiate the a/c. It just comes with a knocking noice on the left of the block. So because of this your saying that all that is needed is to replace the fan?
After another test shop says $1000 to replace compressor, dryer and basically the entire system. Looks like this is what I will be stuck with! On the bright side, no black death.

Open the hood, with the engine and AC on, the fan on driver side should be on.

As mentioned, don't replace anything until you know the condenser fan works. Also clean the condenser with a garden hose and soft brush if it is clogged with bugs and debris.
