Default Air filter instead of pcv valve??

Hey everyone I just installed an AEM Short ram intake on my 99 EX a couple months ago and my mechanic noticed I ****ed up and left my PCV valve out and just connected the hose from the valve cover to the intake tube. Will this cause any major problems? What im really wondering is can I just put a mini air filter connected strait to the valve cover so the gases can still escape? Ive seen pics of other honda engines where people have done this. Im just curious if anyone else knows about this or why they do it.
Thanks in advance!
