Default 99 hood latch cable replacement

Would like to hear back from someone who has tried this before.

I read somewhere that you might be able to tie a cable to the end of a hood latch cable and pull the old cable out pulling the other cable thru too. Once thru the other end tie the cable pulled thru to the new cable and pull back from the latch end. This would eliminate removing the fender wall from the drivers side and make the job easier. Has anyone done this before ?

Another question. Looks like the front grill has to be removed to get to the end of the hood hatch release for removal. Is this true?

fyi,
for those who have a 99 civic i see no way to remove the front grill without removing the bumper.

any one remove the front bumper and snake the cable out with a wire attached and then reatach to new cable then pull back thru to hatch, eliminating the dirver side fender removal?

Question Replacing hood release cable

I have the same problem on my 99 Civic. I was hoping someone here would have advice about replacing the cable. I was hoping not to have to remove the whole bumper to do it, but it seems like that is the case. I have also heard that you can tie a wire to the old cable when you pull it out, and use that wire to pull the new cable into place. Has anyone actually replaced this part?

Thanks.

I just changed the one on my '99 hatch since the end of mine had broke off, seems to be a common problem with these. You have to pull the inner fender out. The reason is the cable runs through a rubber grommet on the inside of the fender to the inside of the car and it is a very tight fit. Not to mention there are several plastic clips holding the cabe to the body of the car. I pulled the front bumper cover (since you can't remove the grille with the bumper on the car) so I could get the hood latch off since the cable is hooked on to the latch. Pay close attention to the alignment marks of the hood latch! If not put back in the proper location the hood may not close properly! There are also several plastic clips holding the cable to the core support as well. It isn't very hard to change at all. Just pay close attention to what you are doing and you shouldn't have any problems!

I just changed the one in my '99 hatch, since the handle had broken off mine. Seems to be a common problem with these. It isn't a hard job just pay close attention to what you are doing and you shouldn't have any problems. You are going to have to remove the inner fender liner. There is no way you will be able to fish the new cable through. Reason is there is a rubber grommet on the inside of the fender that routes the cable into the interior, and the fit is very tight to keep any water out. Not to mention there are several plastic clips holding the cable to the body. I took the front bumper cover off, since you can't take the grille off with the bumper on the car. There are more plastic clips holding the cable to the core support as well. The most critical thing is removal and installation of the hood latch. If you look at the front of the latch you will see alignment marks on both the latch and the core support. Draw a picture, write it down, take a picture, do what ever you need to do to remember how it is aligned. This is the important part, if you reinstall the latch wrong the hood may not latch properly! So make sure and pay attention! Then take the latch off and remove the cable. Like I sad it isn't hard to do, just pay attention to that hood latch alignment! Don't want to hear about you hood flyin' up! LOL.

Thanks a bunch! I'll make sure to match mark the hood latch and the body with paint so I get it back correctly.

No problem! Whole job begining to end probably took about an hour, maybe a little longer since I had never tried it before. Good luck.

Guys/Gals I had this same problem plastic broke on my hood handle bought this and have been using it for like a year and it works great! I just painted black because I didn't like the design but that is just me.

you just have to remove the kick panel and then use a needle nose to slide the rest of the broken plastic off the metal and then put this on and you are good as new. it comes with an little allen wrench and locks itself onto the metal bar. works great and saves money and time.
