Default 98 civic Speed help

Hey I have a 98 civic the the speedometer and odometer is not working. When i start the vehicle it just goes to 20mph and bouces up and down like 5 MPH no matter how fast am i going. I am thinkint the gauge cluster went bad. What do you all think???

Also if I buy a cluster online how do i adjust the mileage on the new cluster to what the vehicle really has on it?? Please help me out. Thanks Richard

Check the connections in the back of the odometer. Maybe its not properly plugged in. If all else fails I've got an extra 98 cluster laying around.

Does that cluster have a tach and is it for a manual or auto. I checked the connection, had it all pulled apart. It seems to all be fine. I will check the cruise when the speedometer is not working to see if it is the VSS.

This has happened to me...replace the cluster!!! After you do that, you will definately be back in business. As for the miles, what I did was I took a really small screwdriver and manually pushed each digit so that the new one read what the true mileage was. This does work because after doing this and 4500 miles later, the speedo and odometer are still working perfectly fine. Try it!!
