Default 97 Civic Smell gas but no visible leaks/ T belt

I have a 97 civic and I can smell gas fumes but there are no leaks. Please help. The car has 272k and I'm not sure if the timing belt has been replaced. Is there an easy way to check? If I need to replace it can I do this myself? Thanks.
