Yes.
You need to remove the whole thing, engine and transmission. The axles are attached to the transmission. You don't wanna try to float the transmission while you pull the engine. It's much simpler to pull the whole thing at once.

Lift the front of the car off the ground and support it. Remove the wheels/tires and undo both lower ball joints. Pop the axles loose and then pull the axles out of the transmission by swinging the hubs out. It is not necessary to remove the axles completely from the car.
