88-91 civics have the cable tranny... he has a hydro tranny.
ive had the exact same experience with my hatchback. eventually all the syncro's go bad. starts with 2nd popping out then 3rd and then 4th.

It's your mainshaft bearing, it inside your tranny, i did a DIY but now the pix is no longer there, but you can read it and it'll give you better idea.
But how to tell if throw out or mainshaft bearing (while engine running) -
-step on clutch noise goes away = mainshaft bearing
-No noise, but when step on clutch you hear noise = throwout bearing.
if you would like tackle it yourself, the bearing cost about $30, in the process you'll get hands-on experience.

yea i was thinking about rebuilding it myself just for the experience...also thanks for all your input.as for as getting transmissions off of craigs list id...id rather not just for the simple fact that people lie an cheat an steal.an if i bought a bad tranny off someone i wouldn't be very happy.i just broke down an when out an got myself the si tranny shorter gears an its also a bit lighter.
