Checking the fuel filter could be somewhere to start.
Also, have your mechanic check if the engine thermometer/thermostat is ok. If it's giving a false reading, it could contribute to power flux/ engine dying etc if it send the ECU data that would cause that reaction.

think that is the engine coolant temperature sensor. under the dist connected into the head.
should be another coolant temp sensor in the rad to turn on the fans.
at least on 88 - guess the same for 2000.
