Wink 89 Honda Civic VSS

I'm getting a code 17, and the speedo isn't working right. Where is the vss located and how hard is it to change? Thanks

its probably your speed cable is broken.

unhook your cluster and pull it out and check your speedometer cable.

The VSS is located on top of the transmission. I replaced three of them in three different Hondas. They're very easy to replace.

94 is right, before 1992 the speedometer and odometer are purely mechanical. The VSS is an electrical switch built into the speedometer in the cluster. Clearly if the speedometer isn't moving, there will be no signal from the VSS.

Easiest way to check the cable is to disconnect it at the transmission (remove spring clip on the side, pull cable out) then pull the cable out of the housing. If it doesn't all come out including the square part on the end that drives the speedometer, you need a new one. You should be able to disconnect the speedometer end by taking the trim off of the dash above the cluster (look through the windshield to see where the screws are).
