for some reason it stopped shifting into reverse

More info would help. Does it make any sounds. What have you tried? Have you checked the reverse lock out.

it is a five speed it does not make any sounds
just like the gear disappeared all of the other gears are fine i have not taken the shifter apart or anything

When you move the handle to reverse, do the back-up lights on the back of the car come on? That would prove that the linkage is OK and the problem must be inside the transmission.

no the lights do not come on no noises anything

Is the backup light bulb burned out? Is there battery voltage at the receptacle?

Get under the car, use pliers to grab the U-joint where the shift rod goes into the transmission, twist the linkage clockwise and push forward (into the transmission). I think that should be reverse. Check the bushings on the rod under the shift handle.
