Default 89 Civic electrical problem. ADDITIONAL INFO

OK, I got this thing at an auction. It's a four door 89 Civic with the four culinder and automatic transmission. The turn signals, tach, fuel gage and temperature gage work intermittently. The first time I noticed it, I was playing around with the transmission in neutral and while moving the shifter, basically, the left half of the instrument panel went dead. Also the turn signals quit working. According to the wiring diagram I have in my Haynes manual, they are all run off the same circuit. Has anybody run into this and solved it? Is there some wiring that runs by the transmission that the shifter could be pinching or messing up? HELP ! ! ! !
I forgot to mention, it runs good, and starts right up...I just can't drive it without the lights and gages...HELP

Electrical problems are very hard to ttpubleshoot. Following the wiring diagram, I would look for loose wire, loose connection, burnt/ overheated connection, corroded connection and the like on affected system first.
