I let the auto trans do the shifting for me but for the most part, I try to let the little guy run at the 1.5krpm where it seems to like to run. I figured the programmatical dudes made it do that to get better mileage so I let it happen...

Thank you all for your tips. I will let you know if I get back into the mid-30s. I'm also going to check out the hypermileage crap on cleanmpg.com. Seems like tree-hugging, rainbow-wearing,communist, iMac stuff to me but I'd rather do that than buy some asswipe at Exxon a new Escalade...

Peace out.

i'm amazed that you're only getting 25mpg...

I've got an Si and my combined average is higher than that! and that's using a constant winter fuel down here in virginia/maryland (damn constant 10% ethanol mix), even my CR-V averages that!

my biggest trick, I go to the following for the most part: 3.5k, 3k, 3k, 3k, 3k.... granted I have 6 gears which makes highway cruising at high speed a little more fuel economy friendly (65mph in 6th is just over 3k), but shifting early is a huge saver. I think my car would stall if I shifted at 1.5k!

Driving the speed limit, not using your AC and just in general coasting to a stop can have a decent fuel savings.

Yeah, we have a constant 10% ethanol mix here in NH and I have the 5-speed auto tranny. I'm hoping that I can get better miles out of the higher tire pressure (40psi) without screwing up my tires or suspension...

The roads here in NH are totally F-ed after this horrid winter too...

If you are not willing to change your driving style to get better mileage, then live with what you get and quit complaining. The car is capable of excellent mileage, even better than what I get. If you are not comfortable shifting at anything less than 3K then do so, just don't blame the car for your under 30MPG. As I mentioned previously, your brake pedal is the other culprit here. Plan ahead more. It is not necessary to come up to a stop light/sign at 40 MPH+ and hit your brakes. You are wasting a lot of gas doing that.

I am making general comments here, and am not aiming these remarks at anyone in particular, please do not take them personally. The things you are all saying here are the same things I hear from others, notonly on this forum. When someone comes into my local Honda dealer complaining about bad mileage on their gen8 civic, the service manager shows them a copy of my logbook. I am constanly trying to get better mileage. If mileage IS important to you, keeping working at changing your driving style. Practice makes perfect.

Oh, I do live in a metropolitan area and I have yet to be "run off the road". Don't support your driving style with bad logic.

1500rpm in 1st for me is 3mph...
1500rpm in 2nd for me is 10mph, 1500rpm in 3rd is about 14mph, 1500 to 4th stalls out... simply put, car isn't able to go that slow in 4th gear or higher.

Guys? I can see Gene's point about the driving habits being the driving factor with mileage (assuming a properly running engine). Please keep in mind that I have a STOCK EX AUTO so the talk about shift points is somewhat irrelevant for me. The car shifts when it does. As for up-shifting at 1500rpm, yeah, that's pretty dumb. RUNNING at 1500rpm is probably what was meant.

In terms of drafting? Unless you're ina NASCAR race or your tooling down the road with 3 or 4 of your buddies to trade off, please don't do it. It is a really stupid way to save gas. Drafting a truck is like having sex with brazlian trannys: It might feel good but you'll die eventually...

Let's keep the topic positive and constructive. Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment, I try. My guess is that very few people who complain about mileage on Gen8 civics have problems a service center can help with. The vast majority of low gas mileage problems are related to the owner's right foot and attitude. As to how to improve your mileage Peg_Leg, you obviously know more than we do here, so none of our suggestionsare going tohelp you.

cderalow: I believe this thread relates to the base models not your Si. It does not surprise me that the RPM recommendations do not work with your car. Thanks for misinterpreting my post.

You folks need to concentrate on the message here, and stop trying to shoot the messenger.
