Make sure the timing belt is not stripped. Take the oil cap off and watch that the rocker arms move when cranking the engine.
If it's a distributor system the coil is inside the distributor, if it's the distributorless system there is one coil for each plug, on top of the spark plug itself.

When you have spark and fuel but no start, the first thing to consider is a slipped timing belt.
**Note, if the 2001 Civic has an interference engine, then a slipped timing belt can also mean damaged valves and pistons.**
If the timing belt turns out to be fine, you next may want to check for low compression in the cylinders.

Is the CEL ON? Any engine smoking prior to engine shut down? All fluids topped off and normal in appearance? Check cylinder compression prior to removing the head -- could save time and money in the long run.

To check if the belt has jumped, it is not necessary to take out the crank bolt, etc. Simply take the upper plastic timing cover off, leave the lower cover in place. You will need to loosen the valve cover and lift it up to get the timing cover off. Rotate the crank counterclockwise, the way it normally turns, to TDC (single mark on the accessory pulley). Examine the marks on the cam pulley. If the "UP" is down, turn the crank exactly one turn counterclockwise back to TDC again.
