1996 Civic ex problem
Hello, new member to the forums here. Quick question, the other night i was riding home on the highway, doing about 70mph, and all of a sudden my check engine light turned on. At the same time my speedometer went haywire, not reading the proper speed, and doing a dance back and forth. On top of that, the headlights and taillights will get dull and bright with each cycle of the 4 cylinders, which on top of it, to not seem to be in the right timing anymore. Any ideas on what it could be? I turned the car off, checked for any damages anywhere, did not see any. The car turns on without trouble, but as soon as the gas peddle is applied, it doesnt have the same acceleration it used to, due to the incorrect timing I noticed. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thankyou.

Grounding out somewhere. Do you have an automatic? If so it could be the Vehicle Speed Sensor, located on the back of the transmission near the firewall. My spedo did that and I had to tap a new 12v wire to the power spot on the speed sensor so it wouldn't jump around.

RE: 1996 Civic ex problem
Same thing just happened to me a few weeks ago. Car wouldn't accelerate properly, timeing was off, and speedo went haywire.
When I pulled the CEL Code it showed that the O2 Sensors, and Speed Sensor was out. I took it to a mechanic and they said that I had blown a fuse, so my guess is that you blew a fuse. There was a short somewhere that kept blowing my fuse.
If you don't know where you fuse box is, on my 97' EX it's on the drivers side under and left of the steering wheel. There should be a slot that you can pull on.
Id say to check for short's anywhere, if you don't find any then replace the fuse. If you find a short, fix it then replace the fuse. If after about 10-miles it happens again, then you just blew your new fuse and you still have a short somewhere.
Hope that helps!
