1993 Engine And Transmission Identification
I am new to these Hondas. We just bought a 1993 Honda Civic DX. I am having a hard time determining what engine and what transmission are on this thing. The valve cover says VTEC on it, but I can't be sure if it really is. The previous owner didn't say if the engine was swapped. Can you help me determine what engine and what transmission I have?
The reason I ask is that the transmission is "growling". I thought it was the through-out bearing, but when I got the transmission out to change the clutch the through-out bearing was fine, however when I spin the transmission it makes a "growling" noise. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Is the engine single or dual cam? Also find the block number on the front of the block where it meets the transmission. I think if you have the stock EX engine it will be D16B6. (The DX engine, D15B7, was not VTEC and said "16 VALVE" on the valve cover.) Anything that starts with "D" is basically a stock Civic engine of one kind or another.
Unless abused, the first thing to go on a D-series transmission is always the input shaft bearings. They're easy to replace.

Thank you, I can now Identify my engine.
I have either the
D15B(JDM) SOHC VTEC 92-00 Civic 130hp(Can be noted by black valve cover like the USDM 92-95 D16Z6 ex/si engines)
or the
D15B(JDM) SOHC 3-Stage VTEC 92-00 Civic 130hp(Can be noted by 96-00 style usdm D series style grey valve cover and has 2 vtec selinoids)
Here are some pictures, can you help me little further?

Yes a D15B (no suffix number) is a JDM engine. Between the two, the VTEC solenoid is different. Get a picture of the back of the head above the intake manifold near cylinder #4.
You also have power steering. That was not stock on the DX but it could have been swapped on. Are the windows manual or power?

Ok, I am still working on identifying my transmission. I called a guy that said he had several Honda Civic transmissions and to bring mine down as a core. I did so only to find that the 6 or 7 transmissions he had were not the same as mine. Either they were cable shifters (mine is hydraulic) or they had different mount points. Needless to say he didn't have one and I am stuck with a bad transmission. I am thinking about fixing it myself, but I need to know what it is first. I can tell it is a S20, but what else do I need to know? I want to order a rebuild kit, and recommendations on what and where to order? Pictures Below.

It is single-stage VTEC.
If the transmission goes into all gears OK but makes noise even in neutral, generally you only need to replace the bearing(s) on the end of the input shaft. Usually only the one furthest from the engine, it is a weak part in the design. Even if swapping to another used transmission I'd still put a new bearing in it.
I think (not sure) that the gears and shafts inside most D-series 5 speeds may be the same, though the case (clutch and mounting points) may be different. So you could try taking the guts out of one and putting in your case.
