Timing belt may have skipped a tooth. Check the cam and spark timing.

That car has a tiny computer under the dash but it is not relevant to this problem. It controls ONLY the idle mixture and has no self-diagnosis function.

It is interesting ot learn that i have a computer for fuel idel under my dash - i had no idea. I am not sure if i have a black box - i dont htink so. Also the cats is an interesting idea - i guess a blockage could cause this - but that thing is rusted solid on the engine - i would hate to take it off if i wasent sure it was the problem.

Back box as in exhaust. Had a similar problem when mine was blocked. Start the car and put your hand over the exhaust. There should be a build up of pressure if clear. Dont keep it blocked too long maybe a couple of seconds.

realy think i should have named this thread " What would keep a 85 civic from being able to rev over 3000 rpm" but oh well. That is the true problem. The engine over no load will rev to 4000 but under load will only get as high as 3000 rpm before it starts to buck and bog. There is no power above 3000 rpm. The problem happened over 2-3 days 6 months ago while i was driving it. The power seemed to be getting lower in higher rpms before it setteled where it is. I have been driving it like this now or 6 months.

Now that i have just finished typing htis it looks more and more to me like a timming problem - but when the car first developed the issue - the timming was correct - i will have to check it again.

any more ideas?

Here is the update:

Car is getting worse - will not rev above 2500 rpm.

- I have replaced the PCV valve (which was a bitch) - and the car idels beautifully - but still will not rev high. (i invented a cool pcv extracting tool - will post photos)

- I checked the exaust and i believe it is ok. I put my hand over the exaust pipe, and i felt pressure - as you would expect - i guess this means the back muffler is ok. anyone think the catillitic converter could be stuffed?

-Still have not done the obvious checking the timming - but i will try asap.

- How could i test the fuel idel computer? - any ideas?

- any more ideas in general?

thanks everyone for all your help!!!
