01 Civic transmission problem

01 Civic transmission problem
Can anyone give me advice: I took my '01 Civic, auto transmission from the flat lands to the mountains this weekend. I have never had a problem with it, but at the end of a 7-mile moderate grade climb on a back road, she suddenly did not want to move faster than about 5 mph. We let her cool off, then rode back home (5 hrs on the interstate 60-75 mph, a few climbs) with no problems. The person that normally drives it said that the last time they were in the mountains with this Civic, they thought they may have smelled a "rubber burning" odor.
The car has 150,000 miles on it and has never had the transmission fluid changed or any other transmission work. If I bring it to a dealer are they going to do any more than change the fluid, because I can do that myself?
What else is there to do? I don't mind paying the dealership to do something I can't, which is anything beyond changing the fluid.
Thanks

I hope someone gives you some input on this, I had a similar problem the other day with my '97 Civic. I had to drive up a long, steep grade twice on my way and way back on a trip and I smelled something like rubber burning both ways towards the top of the pass, but my car didn't slow all that much, just a horrible stink. All I could figure was the amount of people (weight) in the car made the drive tire get very hot pulling up the mountain...??

150k and never a fluid change or add? That's unheard of! I change mine every 10k miles and I still have a post here about a trans issue. The 2001 has THE WORST auto ever! Read here:

I think you will need to change the whole thing my friend. Just some new fluid isn't going to fix it!

I have changed cars from auto to stick. But those were in the old, very old days when that could be done.
It could be done but probably is not worth the extra hassle. There may well be many other things that would need to be changed in addition, as they are different for the auto v. the stick.
The big item would be the computer. I think with that the only way would be to totally change the computer. And no idea what else would then be changed with that.
The dealer service people may be able to tell you. They would not do it. But they may know what would be involved.
Probably too much.
