RE: 00 Civic D16Y8 engine problems
Probably a rod, just like the problem my buddies car had. What you need to do is drain the oil and pull the pan.
But to do this, you have to remove the exhaust. I just removed the manifold from the head, and then unbolted the pipe from the cat, seeing how the head would have to be pulled to get the pistons out anyways to have the rods measured for accuracy. All the bolts/nuts for the pan are a 10mm socket I believe. You have to pull the two little brackets off that hold the transmission to the engine, and then take the inspection cover off to get to the other 2 bolts. If you have an automatic, ignore everything I just said because I've onlydone this with a manual.
Once you get the bolts out, I put one bolt and the backet back into the pan, just so I would have something to pull against to get the pan down. If you have a rubber mallet, you could use that to gently tap around the pan to get it loose. Then once it's down, start feeling the rods where they connect to the crank. Chances are one will be loose. Good luck!

One other thing I should have mentioned is, have you tried running premium gas in it? It could be pinging, but pinging usually occurs at high RPM under full throttle. It's possible at low RPM, but only if the timing is too far advanced, and it would be powerless or ping worse at high RPM.

yea my buddies dad said to put a little bit of premium in it or go buy some octane booster.. which one would work better?? so if it were to come down to the rod being bad whats the best solution to take care of it? rebuild or replace?? i probably have asked that before but i rather be sure then to guess. and thanks for your info, you were a lot of help!

Well, since you're going to make the drive up this way, I'll let the crank go for $30, and the rod/piston for$10, $40 bucks total. I'll toss in a couple bearings from the good rods too if you're interested
Yeah, the rodon piston #1is what snapped, all the bearings stayed in tact. There are no gouges, scratches, dents or dings on the crank or anything like that, and it was very carefully removed and stored.
I personally dont have the means to mic it, but I can try and see if my buddy has the neccesary tools.

c1v1cbo1817- I would try higher octane gas. I never trust anything in a bottle that says "Octane Booster".... or "Stop Leak"... or anything in a bottle except antifreeze, oil, and transmission fluid. So try that and see what happens. In terms of rebuild or replacement, it all depends on what is wrong with it now. If the crank/rods are still ok now, that doesn't mean they willbe when you get back from thegas station to get premium gas. You're kind of gambling right now. I would definitely try the gas first, but be easy on it. So if it doesn't need rebuilt now and just needs a replaced rod bearing, and something breaks, you will then need a rebuild.

Forty04- He said consider it all sold. I think he wants all three rods/pistons also.
Going back to your earlier post about when you'll be home... you said you'd be home all day Sunday, but then later said you'd be pub crawling Sunday haha. Tomorrow (Sunday) would actually be best for a buddy of mine and myself to come up. Let me know!
