i heard on cnn that microsoft may not have enough new 360s to meet customer demand until summer.
I may have to rethink selling my xbox 360 on ebay.
nothin' like having something teenagers want really bad with disposable income...

Xbox 360 costs $715 to make
>> From joystiq.com:
Earlier numbers by Business Week may have reported that Microsoft is losing $126 on every Xbox 360 sold. That figure is now believed to be a bit higher by some. According to Insider Scoop, the world's largest software maker is losing upwards of $300 per console sold. From the article: "A high ranking friend at IBM, one that worked on the Xbox 360 chip design, tipped us regarding the real expenses involved in manufacturing the Xbox 360... 'It costs Microsoft approximately $715 to make, the manufacturing costs are still too high, another reason why they're producing relatively small quantities.'"

RE: xboxes...
Thats pretty bad buisness. If they loose $300 per console, they would have to sell 6+ games per console just to break even and the $50 per game isn't all profit, so they would have to sell a bunch of games per console. Add that to the fact that the 360s don't work right and MS is having to take them back and fix them, which also adds to thier costs. Looks like Gates is gonna loose a bunch of money on 360 cause he couldn't come out with a good console. Playstation is still gonna have better graphics.

RE: xboxes...
microsoft has always lost money on xboxes. they readily admit it.
i think their trying to make money off games, just like they do software.
but it's still a stoopid strategy. money down the drain, is money down the drain.

I kinda think the strategy makes sense. You spend a lot of money to make the system the best you can, and then charge more for the soft/hard-ware. that way they can advertise their product as being the best.
As for a shortage, I was at Best Buy yesterday, and they had 2 of the deluxe models, and 1 of the core models. I guess it just depends on where you look.

RE: xboxes...
I highly doubt they lose money on each system. Microsoft is out to make money, They make money on the sale of the Xbox system, logically they have to. If they made money off of only the games there would be a much wider selection for XBOX 360, oh and theyd have a HALO 3 out too.
