what makes a performance car?
Today me and a friend were talking about how some cars never gets a after market backing, for instance ( i know these cars suck) but a cobalt Lt, 2.2 DOHC ECOTEC, has all the same tech that most tuners cars have but has no after market backing. Yet i cant even tell you how many of these cars I see with pep boys exhaust, so sombody wants to do stuff to them. My cousin has a 3.0 V6 DOHC Vtec acura, its a 2 door (dont know what kind) and i believe its a 98, it has as much engine tech as any other of the civic but no one makes mods for that car and i love the idea honda puts a V6 motor that gains the respect of the performance companies. So my question is why does some cars that have the same tech as the tuners not have a performance backing especially if people want to do something performance to them?

RE: what makes a performance car?
They weren't featured in The Fast and The Furious
I know the tuner world was around long before those movies, but there wasnt this mass eruption of cheap honda/mitsu aftermarket parts till after that movie and the subsequent birth of the 16 year old vin diesal wannabe in his grand ma's old civic.
Demand == a market == production
Too many people are engrained with the image the old 2200 OHV Jbodys with the 108hp engine to ever think the j can be fast, despite the fact that eco powered sunfires/cav/cobalts are known to break into the low 16s even high 15s stock.
As much as I would love to mod my ecotec, the parts are way to expensive( $275 for a injen CAI of ebay yea right!) and GM has performance parts but only if you are ready to go to the big league with it. Tremendous potential in the engine, but not for me. I stick to the universal mod, car electronics

RE: what makes a performance car?
personally ... i know its crappy getting parts for the todays" performance" cars...
like he said^^ supply and demand are hand and hand... no body wants performance parts for an escort... cobalts are hott of the market this last year... they will have parts soon when ppl start getting them more... they are still pushing the cavis though...
i had problems when i had my 2.0 escort.. cause no one had the sohc parts.. they all had the zetec parts... which sucked..
do what i do when parts arent around... find a cheap part..and modify it...
i have a cold air intake on my van... who can complain to that???

RE: what makes a performance car?
the cobalt is in no way as tunable as a civic. the engines in them suck and will never have as much potential than any honda engine (except maybe the D17 )
honestly the cobalt wont ever be as big of a tuner as a civic...but it will prolly hit close. the engines arent as good and it would be hard to put a better engine in it. GM isnt really known for engine swaps. plus engines dont always come down to how big the cylinder is or how many cams it has...just because the engine in a cobalt is a 2.2 DOHC it doesnt make it as good of an engine as an H22.
