Default new(ish?) guitar

ok well today i went up to the highschool. im a section leader and today we had 'student leader day'. its a day when all the student leaders get together to talk with the directors about this season and how everythings going to operate...drill, music, changes from last year...etc. after that we started cleaning up the band wing (long hallway, lockers, uniform room, makeup room for the musicals, and rooms A B and C...along with six or seven practice rooms). well when we were cleaning up i found this acoustic guitar. i know who it belongs to, but he graduated and lives in florida. one of the directors asked me whos it was, i told him, and asked him if i could have it. he said sure. so now im the proud new owner of a new (used) acoustic guitar.

its in **** condition. its probably a ****ty guitar...ive never heard of the company (Sigma Guitars?) but when i got it for free i wasnt going to complain. its got a lot of wear and tear, the fretboard is worn down and the finish is coming off, its strings/tuning pegs are ****ed up, and i probably am going to replace the pickguard. heres some pics of it...look for more later when i start fixing it up.

guitar:

fretboard...you can tell the finish is starting to wear down on it. its like that all up the fretboard.

chips out of the headstock:

damage on the back of the body...theres way more than shown here. it will take a while...but it wont be hard to fix them (minus the dent)

all those little white flecks on the back of the guitar are chips out of the stain. it will take a while to clean up and fix but it'll be sweet when im done.

so what do you think? im going to clean it up, fix the chips in the stain..and try to figure out how to fix the big chunks out of the headstock. then im going to restring it and see how it plays. i'll try to get some recordings of how it sounds so you guitarists can give your opinions.

It just has some character. Some guitars that are "worn in" play the nicest.

my very first guitar was one of those Yamahas you can find over at costco... seriously, I love that more than any other guitar I have because of sheer personality. Yeah it has a hole in the back, I just hold it closer to me. But having a junk guitar gives you the ability to take it anywhere and play wherever people can exist. Like my civic "The Blue Magellan" my Yamaha is "Magellan" because he has travelled the world and has woo'd many a foreign chick (BEFORE MY WIFE). It has survived bumpy flights, cruises, and long waits in cold car trunks. I say congrats with your old timer friend and all you need are some exiler mediums with the nylon wrapping inside... I love dropping the tuning down on Magellan to get the strings loose so I can hear that rattle when you strum hard. I'm telling ya, there is nothing better than a crappy old guitar!

Honestly I wouldnt bother fixing the dents. Like moogly said. old guitars rock. My first guitar was a used, cheap *** epiphone. Chips and dents and scratches everywhere. But it got the job done. If i were you i could care less what it looked like. By the way have you seen Stevie Ray Vaughn's signature model? Or john mayers, eric clapton? Vintage/ Warn look is in.

The guitar has character...clean the oil and dirt off the fret board when you re-string it..and have fun. Your guitar looks new compared to Willie's. Remember..if it's to shiny you won't want anyone (including you) to actually use it.

well it didnt hit me until late last night (early this morning actually)...i have heard of sigma guitars. i took a quick look at this thing when it hit me...and a quick three seconds told me enough. 'this is an exact copy of a Martin D-28...holy ****!' exact same woods, measurements, everything. 2 part rosewood back, rosewood sides, mahogony neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard...my jaw just dropped. four ribs, its the exact same guitar. im sure its not made as well, but after a new set of D'addarios and some thorough cleaning...i think this might replace my dads old Gibson J-40 with this one as my main acoustic. i might actually be recording some music with a couple more friends and i'll probably take this (along with the Gibon and the Guild 12-string that i own) so you guys can hear it.
