Default motorcycle license

Do you need to have your car license to get a motorcycle license?
My friend's trying to get a motorcycle license, I think M1 or something, but then we don't know.
Thanks.
What bikes are good to start with?

You have to have at least a driver's permit. The motorcycle permit exam/license exam is a purely skill exam. There aren't any questions about the rules of the road. I'm pretty sure you need a DL to get a M class license. You don't need a DL to get a motorcycle permit though, you just need a permit. A good bike to start out with is a 250CC, especially for the exam. Its hard to pass the motorcycle exam with anything bigger. Also, use the search this topic has been covered at least twice in O.T.

I'm interested in getting a license for bike also, and I have been on a few bikes before. So, what kind of license allows you to drive just normal sport bikes?
and I'm into sport bikes.

In IL (might be true for other states) there are two types of motorcycle licenses. One is a Class L license which allows you to drive anything that has a 150CC or less. The other is a Class M which allows you to drive any motorcycle. I think there is a seperate one for trikes as well, but if you have an M you can ride a trike.

just curious agentofdarkness do u need a license to ride a moped? asking cause i cant think of a need for license to ride up to 150cc bikes other then a 50cc moped, do that many ppl ride 150cc bikes?

ppl around here would not ride anything that small unless itsa moped and they have no license
