Take some computer certification classes like Microsoft Certified Professional or A+ or networking stuff. You'll open lots of doors with those. Some of the positions could be done from home or with minimal contact with the public if you think you're being stereotyped as a loser or druggy. I don't advocate drug abuse but it's not "drugs" it's the individual's personality. An abusive personality will abuse anything. Is it okay to be drunk out of your mind because its alcohol?? Most of my college buddies and myself used to blow off steam and chill out with booze and pot. Nobody ever went nuts. Nobody ever started shooting up heroin or using crack ( oops, wasn't around yet ) . We caught a buzz, chilled for awhile, playedvideo games etc. BUT, if your an abuser, you can abuse ANYTHING. It seems like it's not enough to just get high anymore. You have to get totally F*CKED UP! My buds are all professional, successful people from District Attorney's , lawyers, doctors, Engineers, Stock brokers etc. We still kid the guy who's the DA . He was the biggest stoner in the world compared to us. So he took alot of kidding when his part of the state went crazy on cracking down on drugs. Everything in moderation. Pushanything to the limit-----YOU LOSE!

You can train for some of the computer jobs online and even take the cert exams online. It's one way to go. If you're going to go to work anyway, make the most money you can for your efforts!

a great number of "professional" positions require you to be able to pass a drug test, and be able to pass random drug tests. certified plumbers, electricians etc need to be able to in order to work for most major general contractors. most professional engineering positions require the same, and some local trade unions do as well.

basically not being able to pass a drug test, takes away most high paying positions. appearances do matter as well, long tidy hair can be acceptable, but it has to be tidy and well maintained... the frizzy rock star look does not generally equate to professional in most people's minds, nor do tattoos, or facial piercings, and in some cases, even ear piercings would be fround upon.

if you want a good job, stop smoking pot, tidy up the hair, and lose the "I can be and look like whatever whoever I want attitude", because most employers want people who will look, act and be professional

christ, there was a point at the end of high school where i had the same attitude... plus the "I'm never going to work at a job where I have to wear a shirt & tie every day"...

and now, I'm a successful professional engineer employed at a large general contractor... and, I wear a tie, every day, 9 hours a day, while I work


Also, the computer certification tests don't really get you anywhere these days. My brother had discovered that the hard way for quite a few years, unfortunately, most serious employers want to see a degree of some nature, and would take a person with a degree and little experience over some cert tests and a lot of experience... the cert tests get you a job doing tech support, a degree gets you a network admin or better position... co-authoring a book, being a prominent figure on a major technical publisher, and having the certs, might land you a good job with some computer company... if you're really lucky

I agree. You're preaching to the choir though. I was only trying to give the guy a boost about not thinking of himself as a worthless POS. First impressions are, by far, everything. Perception is the other. I was hardly recommending recreational drug use either. It was as much a phase as was the attitude about not working in a place where you would have to dress professionally. I don't look back too frequently but when I do, on those rare occassions, it tempers my judgement abit. I have managed to stay gainfully employed in the telecom industry for coming up on 30 years, after earning my EE from Arizona State. That was accomplished inspite of not knowing what direction to travel at certain times in my life. We all still like to at least fake some semblance of independence as we bend and stretch to the corporate whims While I am not proud of some of the things that transpired in my past, I have used those experiences to guide myself, my children and my co-workers in day to day experiences. That's what the "been there, done that" expression means to me.
I can't really converse with some of the younger dudes here about the problems they are having with their cars or their lives but I can give them the benefits of my experiences and mistakes. It won't be like the blind leading the lame like it sounds on here sometimes. Nothing that these guys are experiencing here is unique. Same old ****, different day. It's their choice to heed our advise or put some faith in our opinions. It's alot easier to be a loser than to work to have a good life. I got mine. You got yours. Let's see how they make out when all the dust settles! Amen !

The video games were the original PONG and the Atari 2600 vintage games. I even finished college prior to the first PC. I had to use punch cards for data input. Oh yeah, and watch out not to get stomped by dinosaurs crossing the street! Thanks for the props on the car! I've been eyeballing yours as well. Pretty sweet!
