I just got it!!!!!!!!

It was indeed the lil speaker in the bottom right but I had to right click on it to bring up the crazy big menu with all the adjustments and 2 of them were muted.

It looks different because I chose those controls to be there, if you open the speaker again and click options -> properties you will get a list of things you can display with check boxes next to them choose the ones you want, WAVE and SW Synth should def be among the ones you check and click OK. Then again make sure and I think its the WAVE one specifically that the volume is up and the mute isnt checked.
