1. Speed limit signs will slow the speed of traffic.
2. Speed limit signs will decrease the accident rate and increase safety.
3. Raising a posted speed limit will cause an increase in the speed of traffic.
4. Any posted speed limit must be safer than an unposted speed limit, regardless of the traffic and roadway conditions prevailing

Speed limits on highways are STUPID. I don't get how California Basic Speed Law. It states "keep speed at pace with traffic's," yet we still have speed limits. I think super licenses should be given to people willing to an extra modest fee and have zero accidents on their record. People with these licenses could set their own limit. Speed doesn't kill, dumb drivers that don't know what they're doing do.

I agree on one thing, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE.

 

I wholly and completely disagree on two counts:

Most cars people think are sports cars, arent.

It doesnt matter if you are Mario Andretti, if you are going a 100 on a road where others are going 70, it is an extreme danger to the other drivers. If someone were to pull over infront of you your reaction time is not going to be substantial enough to avoid a)hitting them, or b) swerving at 100mph is not going to end any better.

The laws in this country are put in place to protect other people, and to protect people from themselves. I personally dont find any comfort in some 22 year old in a souped up econobox who has happened to never have gotten caught, with a free will to drive as fast as he pleases. In fact, that terrifies me

 

I'll second that....today AGAIN for like the fourth day in a row I have spotted someone on the highway at speed with a flat tire.....I seem to just pass them and the thing blows apart and separates....Check your tires.....check your fluids....

 

I agree with the above. Plus you have people without accidents that think they know how to drive but they don't. They have just been lucky. Me myself I have never been in an accident but there are people who have been in accidents that are very good drivers.

 

Ok i have one for you. when you are traveling 75mph. you are moving aproximately 240 feet per sec. Now according to my anatomy class i took. it takes your nervous system approx. 1/2 sec to realize something is wrong. and it takes exactly 1/2 sec to respond. so there we have 1 full second. now lets say how long does it take you to move your foot from the gas to the brake almost 1 second. so right there we have 2 seconds. in these two seconds we have covered approximately 480 feet. in reality it takes almost 240 feet to completely stop a car from 60mph. now lets say it takes 260 feet to stop your car from 75mph. to stop your car it will take almost 6 seconds. so lets say 6*260ft=1920 ft. plus the full second it took you to realize and react. equals another 500 ft. so we are looking at 2200 ft roughly. 2200ft/3ft in a yard=733 yards.



so lets say you are traveling along a road where safest posted speed limit, is 55mph. You are doing 75mph. someone pulls out in front of you approximately 200 yards dwon the road. imagine how long a football field is. picture two of them in fron of your car. that is not too far but not too close. so it is going to take you almost until you are right on his *** to even be close to being at a safe distance. and even still, what if his car had stalled. or what if you had not been paying attention to the road. messing with your new XM radio. You would have kissed his bumper and your car car goodbye. So letys just think about these things before we speed. ok

(5280 feet in a mile) x (75 mph) = 396000 feet

396000 feet / 60 minutes = 6600 feet

6600 feet / 60 seconds = 110 feet per second velocity NOT 240 feet per second velocity. Tell the story again with the proper figures.

Well I personally don't find any comfort with old men driving sports cars. Secondly, look at the Autobahn. That thing has no speed limit and its accident rate is significantly less than U.S. highways with posted speed limits.
