When I gave up I didnt really have any ill affects but I know others that have and they have been ill for a couple of weeks as pete said. Its the nicotine cravings that were the worst for me.
All in all I dont feel much fitter than I was when I smoked, sure I can run a bit further without getting out of breath, and my appetite increased a bit (Dont become a fat bastard) The main one for me is that I dont really catch colds anymore, which I did quite a lot when I smoked.

Within 12 hours of a person quitting, all carbon monoxide leaves the blood. Five years after quitting, the risk of heart disease and heart attack begins to approach the risk of people who have never smoked. A person who has been smoke-free for 15 years has the same risk of health problems of someone of the same age and gender who never smoked.
Most importantly, the risk of cancer stops rising immediately when a person quits using tobacco.
