Fixing PS2 disk

Fixing PS2 disk
My GT4 disk is freezing while the little clock is swirling loading the cash screen after a race. I'm thinking it may be caused by a scratch but I don't see any major scratches. The disk has a bazillion hours on it.
I've heard of some people polishing CD's with toothpaste, but that seems a little risky.
Ideas?

RE: Fixing PS2 disk
My God of war disk keeps doing that. what i find that works is if i open the disk tray up, and blow in it. Some times the laser gets dust on it.

DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE. People cant be dumber. Toothpaste contains baking soda. Baking soda is a fine grit that is great for carving crap off your teeth. What do you think its going to do with your fragile dvd-rom?

RE: Fixing PS2 disk
Mine did that a long time ago and there are three possiblitys
1. This sounds like the most likey one since u tried it on two differnt ps2s and it is that the disk is srached and u need to by a disk repair kit which there are many out there and they can be found at places like Best Buy or even Wal-Mart. Most of them are cheap and are good to have around.
2. Now depending on if u have the old ps2 or the the new slim version this could be an easy fix or a real pain. It is that your laser is dirty and need to clean it now if u have the slim ps2 this will be no problem just get a paper towel spray some windex on it and lightly dab the laser. However if you have the old ps2 then u will need to take it a part to get at the laser which u can search the web to find intrustions on how to do so.
3.this is the worst case senreio and a common problem with ps2s which is that your laser is about to burn out which means youll start to see disk read errors when you try to play some thing and youll have to buy a new ps2. since you tried it in to differnt ps2s this is most likely not you problem but i have had to replace my ps2 twice becase of this problem so im just ginving u a heads up.
