No ****?!? I was under the impression that WinMX was strictly peer to peer, and that there was no "heart" like Napster, who had a central office.
At any rate, that sucks because WinMX rocked, but i suppose its time to move on. I used Ares for a while and it did not even compare to WinMX. WinMX had so many litttle tricks that most users didnt know about, and once you found 'em, you were golden.. blah, i guess its time to move on. Thanks for all the input guys&gal!

winmx closed its servers because the RIAA threatened them with a lawsuit.

RE: Anyone use WinMX?
well, now i'm a little confused. i had just read a couple articles on the RIAA's website about how they were shutting down winmx by threatening lawsuits. but now i can't find any of that! BUT.....i did find a very useful website for us downloaders:
http://www.eff.org/IP/P2P/howto-notgetsued.php
it's basically an overview of how to protect yourself from the peckers at the RIAA. also, another thing to help protect yourself...i don't know how other programs work, but on winmx, you were able to enque a song on something like winamp. after you'd enque it, you could select the song, check the file info, and look to see if the song is copywritten. if it said no, you can continue to download with peace of mind. if it says yes, just cancel it and find another. some people have ways of removing the copyright from the file info. just thought you all might like to know that, if you didn't already.

I laugh at the RIAA and their feeble attempts to stop music sharing. When they close down one, it's day's until another one becomes just as popular.

Well guys, I've been trying limewire since i got into work this morning, and i must retract my previous statement about this program. Lets see, ive been here for a little under and hour, and i've downloaded 150+ songs. T1 + love for music + GOOD illegal sharing program = happy me!!!!
If i had a choice, i would still be using WinMX, as i said i know all the little tricks to it, but limewire seems to be doing the job just fine. Thanks Guys!!
