the magnetic switches are activated when the two terminals are seperated more than 3/4inch i believe.....

its simply a magnet and two spring loaded pieces of metal... with the magnet close to the unit then the metal are separated... at least thats what i believe.
the switch is definatly the easiest way to wire them up....
but a word of advice... also wire up one led to shine on the floor..... this way if the switch is not turned off and the glove box is closed youll be able to see the light on the floorboard as a reminder to turn the switch off and make it a different color than your blue ones already

there prewired leds are well worth it IMO when it comes to soldering and all that crap...
and to make it even easier... try a flood light led unit... i got 2 of these in white and they are VERY BRIGHT!!!! and the light output is really WIDE BEAM!!!

tho i havent installed mine yet. i was going to put one under the hood and one in the trunk.

i just got the LED's today and will install them tomorrow. but i have a quick question. it seems like the switch will need a 3/4" hole, but i dont want to spend $20 for a 3/4" drill bit, do you guys think i can use a dremel to dig that hole instead?

yea the dremel will work, just work it slowly and check often to make sure you dont make the hole too big. Do you know anyone with a lot of tools? you could always try to borrow them

Try tracing the base of the switch onto the spot you're mounting with a fine tip permanent marker. Then, cut your hole along the inside of that traced line. The dremel will work good. Repeatedly check your hole for fitment as addiction2bass said.
