Default ragged engine noise due to exhaust manifold, please help

hey guys, so i just got a used civic, 97 ex 5spd sedan w/ 89k miles on it and the noise that was coming from under the hood was really really ragged. i didnt notice this in the beginning cuz a.) im retarded and b.) he had an injen intake on which sorta masked the sound.

now i know how a civic SHOULD sound (stock) b/c i used to have one before (97 lx sedan auto 97k miles) and i crashed it. it should sound very smooth and high pitched and should get higher and higher pitched as u climb the rpms.

but here it starts of low pitched and ragged sounding and only get high pitched and smooth after 4500 rpm....

i JUST got the exhaust manifold replaced yesterday.... so there shouldnt be a problem, but it still sounds somewhat ragged.

now can u guys plz help me out? im not sure what the problem is - or is it just that there is no problem and civics are supposed to sound like this...?

i could take a high quality mp3 recording and upload it to megaupload.com if u guys want.... i really wanna know whats wrong.

and if the exhaust manifold (new, replaced one) is messed up, that would freaking suck cuz i paid 320 bucks to get it replaced (plus an oil change).

Thanks in advance..

p.s. - car is completely completely stock

If you could record the sound and let us hear it. It really is hard to describe a sound on the internet or even in person.

got it recorded, 320kbps, real good quality...
listened to it myself.. sounds like an old dying car... which is total bull crap in my opinion b/c my old 97 civic used to sound beautiful.

anyways file is 1.73 mb large. It wont let me upload here, so i'm going upload via megaupload.com.

link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q9JQ9JJ4 or click here
type in 3 letter password which is given in the text box, then wait 45 seconds to download.

and this is w/ a NEW exhaust manifold (before it was broken and car sounds MUCH better - but still ****ty)

THANKS

p.s - this is w/ the hood UP and im pointing the mic directly into the engine... i think in the beginning its generally on top of the engine while idleing then as i rev it up i moved it to the back of the engine and then later moved it to where the exhaust manifold is. i think. tell me if im right. and plus i used the throttle cable itself to rev the engine (if u were curious) heh.

soundfs like the combo of an exhaust leak and a little bit of valve terrain noise(adjust the valves, inspect the springs/retainers)

dang definatly get your valves adjusted!!!!!!!!! that could be messen up your exaust sound.... the valves not closing properly...

just have those worked on first and then if the exaust still sounds bad then reaplce the gaskets... upper, middle, and lower..
