Default 86 accord project

Ok I got the ok to post it here, my current project is an 86 Honda Accord hatchback, this is a very extensive project, involving almost everything on the car, at the moment I'm working on the engine, interior, wiring harness, body ,paintwork, more suspension work, I could go on and on. I've owned it for over 11 years, and it's been off the road for about three years, for this work, I would have already had it done, except for being laid off, and family issues, I had to put it off for long periods, but I'm now back to putting it back together. the biggest thing i'm doing right now, is I converted from the single Keihin nightmare carb, top a set of SU's from a 1972 Datsun 510 sss, it's been a huge project, every single piece had to be made, one at a time. I was having trouble getting SSS parts to fix the carbs, but I now have a very good lead on a set of early USDM Z carbs, they will bolt right up, and use the same linkages. I'll post some pictures soon, this is pretty much an into today. my homepage site is http://losts86hatch.tripod.com

You can repost the project in here as long as it's extensive and ongoing.

Edit your first post to reflect the project.

they made Accord hatches from the first Accord, until the end of this generation in 1989. this is a third generation 86-89. I was out there until about three this morning working on the oil pan, I baffled a pan, and I had to move the PCV pickup, so I could go to braided hose. the hose from the vapor scavenger always rots out, so I modified it to use threaded fittings and braided hose. I was making sure I didn't have clearance issues with the crank. These cars corner well enough to uncover the oil pickup, so it's an issue, i welded in a piece of perforated stainless heavy mesh, oil can flow back to the sump with no problem, but it will stop all the oil from sloshing through it at once, you can see the factory pcv pickup in the pan, It's been welded over.

OK a bit more done on this, the glue that holds the gasket to the pan, during installation failed, so I have to reglue it. I used versachem super sure tack, it usually holds great while doing assembly. I was testing the clearance anyway.

this is the new fitting for the breather box pick up

the other end at the oil separator box, this used to be a flared steel end, i changed it to a threaded end,for an AN adapter, this will fix the problem of the forever leaking hose.

I've been testing the baffle on my bench, and I can definitely see it works, the holes in the stainless mesh will let oil flow to the sump under normal oil return rates, but with a sudden slosh, it delays oil from leaving the sump area. very distinct difference between the two sections of the pan, and no difference with a stock pan. I don't like trap door baffles, they are fine for race engines, but I lost an engine once, due to a stuck trap door.. this is super reliable , no moving parts, all the holes allow oil to return to the pan, but a large movement of oil is restricted

short video, on these engines during a hard move to the left, you can uncover the pump pickup, this seems to control the oil well, and should keep the pickup covered during a maneuver like that

well problems, problems, problems, after I got the pan secured in place, I highly recommend changing the bolts to socket head screws, instead of bolts falling off while trying to install, you stick the socket heads on the drive tool, and they STAY right where you put them. much easier to install overhead in tight spaces. anyway, this is the issue::

it looks like I'm going to have to order -10 tube flare nuts, and some 5/8 hard line, and bend a line to fit. the braided hose ends just don't line up. with some luck and some bending, I can make a hard line. I have an AN flare tool from the WW2 era, and it will put a flare on nearly anything, serious heavy duty stuff, so that's not an issue.

couple of more pictures, and an unusual angle you usually don't see on cars. bottom of the carbs, from UNDER the car.
