I know most people NEVER put on the e-brake in a auto. I never did when I had a auto, only on steep hills.

Most people are also pretty clueless. Just look around at the general population in school, at work, or out and about. There are the unwashed (ignorant) masses, thefew people who know how things work or are willing to learn, and the even fewer who know/learn how things work and care enough to do them the right way.

For example...How difficult is an oil and filter change to do correctly? How is it possible for so many horror stories about Jiffy Lube oil change screw-ups to exist? Basically, how does any literate person screw up an oil change to the point of catastrophic engine failure? Laziness, carelessness, and/or ignorance. Take your pick.

The best way to do it is to come to a stop, apply the E-Brake first, then shift to park so that if you are on a hill, the e-brake will keep it from rolling when you take the foot off the brake. If you are on a hill, it will allow you to shift to drive much easier because there should be no stress on the tranny.
This is exactly how i do it on all of my cars stick or auto hill or not. The ebrake is your friend use it all the time. I live in NYC and have pretty much NO hill but still use it all the time. It makes shifting back into gear in an auto much easier specially if your on any type of gradient.
