Your going to live and learn. At age 17, you think your a great driver. Truth is, you got alot to learn. Im about to be 21 and im still getting dings and dents in my car. Your more focused on your radio than you are on that pot hole your heading straight for at 75mph. Even if you saved up the money yourself, which everyone here did aswell, you should get something cheaper and more reliable. Dont worry about resell value, dont worry about looks or speed, get something thats going to last you a good 5 or 6 years untill your out of college and get a good job. Spending 10k on a car at age 17 is stupid. Just get something cheap. When i say cheap, i mean 3500 and under. Save the other 6500. Save it for college, go on vacation, or just bank it. keep adding money to it, so when you get a good job, you can just get yourself a nice car and itll be paid off. Thats my opinion. But if you want to spend alot of money on a car, i would say go for an acura RSX

I'm assuming you're comparing the scion tc to honda's right? Just like any car you can do CLEAN mods to it and make it look nice. TC is the only scion IMO that looks decent.
as for civics, I wouldn't do anything newer than 2000, exception would be 7th gen si.
You're 17, not sure how aware/smart/mature/responsible you are, but there's no harm in buying a car for $8k if you have the money. I would advise finding a car that would last you for years or buy a car that you wouldn't mind keeping for a while.
My first car at 18 was an eagle summit, but I would've gladly replaced it with my car in bone stock form at that age if I could, just take care of it.

Passing all the "he's only 17" stuff, I think it's just personal preference on Scion or Honda. Way to many people these days see Scion's as "ugh, look at that slow *** tC." Well, people have proven the tC can make it over 1000HP. And I think the term "SI" over the years has just become a hype. Every time someone has a Civic.. "Is it a SI?" A car is a car. It is whatever you like.
But to answer your question, I'd go for Honda. Way more aftermarket parts are manufactured for Honda cars, way cheaper, and easier to find. Not to mention Honda's can last you over 300,000 miles if maintained right. Just my opinion, the lineup for Scion's aren't very interesting. The tC is probably the best model, but the car just looks like a girly car to me. :P
