Need a bit of advice buying a Civic 1996
I wanted to see what others thought about this. This afternoon I went over to check out a civic I had seen in a parking lot the day before with a 4 sale sign.I was the first he's had to check it out he put the sign up the same day we saw the sign. I tried to make a spec sheet
He's asking 5,000 OBO I wanted to see if it's worth the money or should I offer less?
It's a sleeper.
Honda Civic 1996
Good:
New: Engine (d16 long block), powerblock, headers, intake, exhaust, suspension, pedals, steering wheel, battery, rims, tires, sterio, clutch.
Only 15,000m on new engine
Color
Great gas mileage
Room for 2+ bikes
Special steering lock
Super clean interior
A/C (hot & cold)
Adjustable suspension & height
Airbags
Smog ok
Tires good
carfacts
Bad:
Had 180,000 miles before new engine
Manual windows/mirrors
Some bumps/scratches
Manual transmission
Price: 5,000 OBO
He's got all the paperwork, and it's 100% street legal

Personally I tend to stay clear of buying modified vehicles for the fact that you don't know how the previous owner treated the car (I know it's slightly hypocritical; I refuse to buy modified cars, but then I buy a stock car, modify it, and eventually sell it, expecting someone to buy my modified car). The fact that the engine needed replaced at 180k isn't a good sign, either.
On the other side, the car looks pretty good (I mean, it's tasteful). I don't think I'd spend $5k on it, though.
(and a manual transmission is hardly a con )

Ya I would usually stay away from modded engines because kids always seem to beat the hell out of them, but hey he already changed the engine, so that one should be reliable and the car looks clean so it's a pretty good deal.
Of course try and talk him down more if not I would go for it.
