D16Y7 vs. D16Y8
Hi Guys. I recently bought a 96 EX coupe. Apparently the previous owner swapped the Y8 for a Y7, but it appears he kept the VTEC head off the Y8 because I'm pretty sure I'm staring at the VTEC solenoid. This must also mean he kept the Y8 ECM.. Also I am getting a knock sensor code, which makes sense since the harness for it is just swinging below the engine. Pretty sure this is because the Y7 doesn't use a knock sensor, nor have a place to screw it in. I heard of a fix (piezo transducer) to fake out the ECM to think that the sensor is still there and working. Any drawbacks to this? Will my timing get goofy if I do this? Any idea why they didn't put the knock sensor on the Y7?
What else is different between these blocks?
Thanks

So I found out that the Y8 and Y7 blocks are basically the same. So the Y7 does in fact have the place for a knock sensor. So I bought one off ebay for $11 and screwed it right in and no more codes!!

Is there actually a way to install a knock sensor on my y7 block? Is it something the home mechanic can accomplish or should it be done by a machine shop? and then if i can have a knock sensor installed i could use a p28 ecu correct?

sorry this thread is a few months old but totally pertains to information i was looking for. My friend is selling me a y8 head for my 97 lx and i want it to be as close to oem as possible, seen to many mickey mouse jobs on mini me swaps.

The P28 does not have knock control. Installing a P28 would render the knock sensor useless. Install a P30 (b16), or an OBD1 p72 (B18c1) ecu would allow you to continue using the knock sensor if you were going to convert to OBD1.

I can almost guarantee that the P28 does not have knock control for some reason. My ECU doesn't show anything for a knock sensor and that is a chipped P28 running Hondata S300 for an H22a motor.
The only P28 that has knock control were for the 96-97 Del Sols with the D16z6 as they were OBD2. I did some searching around on google and found many threads talking about it already.
