Default D15B with no vtec?

So has anyone ever seen a jdm D15b with a regular 16 valve non-vtec head? Just wondering because one of the engines I have boggles my mind. It's stamped a D15b but has a regular head, if it is the jdm engine wouldn't the only way to tell be measuring the crank?

People swap heads around all the time, since practically any D-series will fit anything else D-series. The number on the engine block only identifies the block.

Well I know that I just find it weird and wanna know if there's a way I can tell if the crank is a JDM D15B crank since I just turned a rod bearing in my boosted car.

There was a JDM D15B non-VTEC.

Here is a good post on all the D15B engines.

The non-VTEC ones encountered are usually the dual carb version. They are converted to fuel injection when installed in US cars, usually just by re-using the existing fuel injection system in the car the engine is swapped into.

To see if yours is the originally dual carb'd one, look on the back of the engine near where a VTEC solenoid would be on a VTEC head... the dual carb'd one will have a port here, most likely covered with a block off plate. This is where there used to be a mechanical fuel pump for the other carburetor. I read somewhere that there is an extra lobe on the camshaft which is what drove the mechanical fuel pump.

You can also look at the plugs on the distributor to differentiate between OBD0 and OBD2, assuming the distributor is the engine's original distributor.

to identify the head there is a code stamped into it just above the exhaust ports, and also the year it was made. for example on a b16 the block sill say b16 and the head will say pr-3 and a year stamp 99. post your results. also take pics and we can help you.

I don't have the original head on it anymore, but I do remember that block-off plate being on the head. So would that mean that it's running the JDM D15b crankshaft in it with the mains being the same as a D15B7 and the rods being the same as the D16Z6?

It's a JDM D15B crank but not the one you are used to hearing of (OBD1 D15B VTEC). I am willing to bet that the cranks are different. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire block is the same as something like a D15B2.

I don't think they're different, from what I read it's just a D15b with a 16 valve head. Also, I have tried putting a piston from the engine onto a D15b7 crank and it wiggles around when torqued down like there's no bearing inside of it.

all the JDM D15B's have a 16 valve head

I don't know what parts are in the block and I doubt you will come across very many people who do. You'll have to do some deep searching of the web.

best way to determine this is to look up part numbers, or actual engine specs
