No unless it was swapped or the head was swapped with a y7 for some strange reason. The ex's had d17y8 SOHC w/vtec.

I believe the Y7 would have come in the Canadian EX models but I'm not 100% sure. As far as USDM civics are concerned, every '96-'00 EX left the factory with a D16y8 engine; that doesn't mean someone didn't spin a bearing, put a hole in the block, etc and swap in the cheapest engine they could find, though.

The Y8's valve cover doesn't actually say VTEC. I think that might be the reason for this thread.

Agreed the valve covers for the Y7 and Y8's look the same:

Because if you have a genuine Y8 it would have vtec.

ValueCovers are different plus the y 7 doesn't have the vtech thing on the back of the head

The valve covers are visually identical.

At any rate, if there's no vtec solenoid, you either have a swapped engine or a swapped head.

Yes, all D16y8s are vtec. D16y7s are not. What does that have to do with the possibility of a fourteen year-old car not having the original engine or cylinder head? Like I said, all 6th generation USDM Honda Civic EXs came from the factory with a D16Y8 engine. That doesn't mean it still has that engine.
