Auto Trans Question. PLZ help ASAP!!
Hi all. Im not a civic driver, but i have a friend who is. She needs help with an auto trans. She has a 99 civic LX 1.6L vtec. what model years can she take a trans out of? She says that when she starts her car, goes from park to reverse, she claims that it sounds like gears grinding together in a manual trans when you arent all the way in gear. I heard her do this one time. She says its been goin on for a while, like a week or two. I looked at it and could not get that noise. I am baffled, and dont know much about civics or hondas for that matter. Like i said its not my car, just trying to help a friend out, and trying to save her big bucks. She is going out of town in like 2 weeks so help is needed like yesterday.
If you have questions, please ask, i will try to answer them to the best of my ability. If i dont have the answer i will call her and ask. Please help me so i can help her.

Correct, the LX is non-VTEC. To the OP, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a new transmission for not much money, as described above.

Could just need the linkage adjusted, it may not be coming fully out of park. In that case the noise would only occur after the car starts moving, and be related to the speed of the car. Try moving the handle slowly further toward neutral while moving backward (and making noise) and see if the noise stops. Or shift into neutral, confirm that it really is neutral, then slowly go back to reverse.
I think all the automatics were the same, it doesn't matter whether it was an LX or EX with the VTEC engine.

And yes, I believe all the D-series automatics were the same.
