Thanks for the advice! I'd remove the AC system, but it gets a little too hot here for that. I hear the whole AC system is pretty heavy (around 50 lbs), though. If I understand how the AC system works, it only causes parasitic losses when its on, so I don't think just removing the belt would help much. I drove the car the last few days without the power steering belt. As far as driving goes, it really wasn't that bad, except for in parking lot situations. I could feel the car being able to accelerate using less gas. I also notice that my last tank of gas lasted longer than usual. Unfortunately, I didn't do an exact measurement of my mpg. But, I am confident it will result in mpg gains. So I ordered the parts to remove the power steering system the "right" way. By the right way, I mean similar to this DIY: DIY: Removing Power Steering - Honda Civic Forum. It looks pretty straight forward.

I finally got around to doing this today. I decided to order a bracket for the breather, and by the time it came in, it was exam season. I'll post up whether I see any mpg gains.

I have 97 CX with no power steering and it gets less mpg than my 97 HX. Both car have AC and a 5 speed trans. Granted the HX was built for MPG, but I still wished my CX had power steering. I don't think you will gain any noticeably increase in MPG.

I don't expect any huge gains. If I get a 2 mpg improvement, I will be very happy. I can always put the power steering back in later if I want. It feels a little quicker; there is less hesitation in the low rpm range (I have an automatic transmission).

Thanks for the link, Trust. That's basically what I did except I installed a breather via a T-fitting.
