RE: starting problems
I had a similar problem and thought it was my starter. There's two beefy electrical connections near the battery: one round and one rectangular. My problem was that there was way too much white grease (possibly dielectric) inside the rectangular connection. I'm not sure if it was a mechanic who did this or the last owner, but the starting was erratic and exactly like you describe. Be sure to d/c the battery before you start trying to clean these connections
EDIT: bah, I'm an idiot. I drive an '86 CRX Si, so your connections probably look different or are in different places. Still, the problem could be the same. Check your electrical connections between the ECU and your wiring harness (by check I mean physically disconnect them and check the insides for gunk)

RE: starting problems
Listen for the humming sound of the fuel pump activating behind you when the ignition key is turned to ON without cranking the engine. If you fail sometimes to hear this sound, then your fuel pump or the main relay is faulty. Also, when was the fuel filter last replaced?
