Default Engine Swap w/ Tranny Issues

copying and pasting from sacicons useful sticky: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/m_10612/tm.htm

I have this:
6G ’96-’00 Civic EX USA EJ D16Y8 1590cc 9.6:1 127hp@6600/107lb-ft@5500

being in Canada it's called an Si not EX, its nice and all but I want something faster, it is an automatic

as many will agree this is perhaps the overall best swap:
6G ’96+ Civic SiR II Japan EK B16A 1595cc 10.4:1 168hp@7800/116lb-ft@7300 S4C

the problem: I want this engine but I want my car to remain an automatic (yes I know, please don't bother with the inevitable lecture). so, is this possible? is there anything special/extra I would need to make this happen? I thought I read that getting an auto tranny from an Integra LS is the answer. also just to supplement this question check out here http://cars.ign.com/mail.html (2005-07-15) where the editor answered my letter, is he on target?

the most promising package I have found so far is here:
http://www.topendmotorsports.com/eng...b16/index.html
$2150 w/ auto tranny, look down the page a little bit...

so guys what do you think? I just signed up because the members here seem very helpful so I look forward to your answers. thanks!

IMO if you want to stay with the auto I would not go with a B16.I'd be looking more at the B20's or H22's.I think the B16's tq is a major issue and while the B18C1's and B18C5's do have better tq it is just not enough to be even remotely quick with a automatic.

The reason why is your average 5 speed honda tranny loses right at 15% of it's power and tq in the drive terrain but a auto matic loses on average 30%

B16A2 manual = 136ish whp and around 99 tq to the wheels

B16A2 automatic = 112ish whp and around 82 tq at the wheels

To put into perspective I have a JDM D15B and before I turbo'd it I did a couple base line pulls on a dyno with bolt-ons and got 128whp and 104 tq to the wheels.

So after all that hard work you would have mildly modded civic ex's keeping up with you and people like me putting cars on you.

Thanks for the response.

I've just been looking at some H22 motors. I see alot of H22A G1 (JDM: 200hp, 161tq) motors are available but still I see two problems:

1) They are OBD 1 and my 98 Civic is OBD 2 (am I right?), what kind of problem is that?
2) Will an automatic transmission hook up to an H22A G1 and what donar car would give me the auto tranny I need? Would an auto tranny from a base Prelude work with this engine?

This engine has much much improved torque over that B16A2 I was considering. So, anyone?

1) you can get a obd2 to obd1 conversion harness from ebay for like $50 to $75

2)Prelude and Accord tranny's will fit as long as they have a F or H series transmission in them

it will be slow that is why.....the B16 is a tq'less ..... match that up with a auto tranny and you got a car with absolutly no bottom end and with the driveterrain loss you have less power than a civic ex 5 speed in stock trim

Yes it seems to be true that JDM B16s did come w/ auto trannies.

To be honest after reading up on the pros and cons of an H-series swap the B16A2 is looking better and better. The hp gain is nice but yes the torque gain is puny. I'm not looking to rule the streets or anything so I don't know if I would be prepared to face the challenges and costs of a H22 swap (motor mount kit, axles, stronger front suspension, tight squeeze, etc.).

For my purposes I think the B16A2 might be perfect for me:
(1) It would be coming into a lighter car (2551lbs vs 2612lbs SiR)
(2) Nice hp gain (127 to 170)
(3) Marginal tq gain (107 to 116)
(4) I can keep it auto (but apparently my stock tranny won't work, I'll have to find a replacement, maybe out of an Integra?)

With what I got now I'm already faster than say 50% of your average joes, I think this swap would make me faster than say 85% of your average joes. I'm cool with that improvement, I'm not out to race everybody on the street I see!!!

I'm telling you man atleast go with a B18C1 or if you are going B16 do a 5 speed conversion.I dont know where you live but around here you would not be beating any average joes with that setup.I with a 1.5 sohc can and do pull slightly from stock 99/00 SI's which being it is 5 speed will no doubt out run your setup.

hehe well i'm not calling stock 99/00 SI's average joes - think lesser, like cavaliers, neons, and sunfires - THEY must be beaten!!!

hehe anyways forget all that - I will include B18C's on my list of possibilities if and only if you can hook up an auto tranny to em. i know an auto tranny is a big ****ing monkey wrench but i need to have it, manual transmission just ain't an option

a friend just told me I could potentially get a b18c (1 or 5) and hook up any integra auto tranny because all b series trannys bolt up to any b series blocks. the only thing he would have to check is whether or not there is a difference in the torque converters. but he believes it should all fit perfectly.

comments? i'm excited if this could be done
