Swap Help needed Please!!!
Hello everyone,
I new to the forum. I have a few question that I hope someone can help me with. I have an automatic honda civic ex with the stock d16z6. Well... my engine is in bad condition it is leaking from the crankshaft oil seal and barley passed smog last year by 1 point. So I figuired rather then try to fix it it would be cheaper just to swap it with another d16z6. Please let me know your imput on this. Do you think it would be better to swap with another d16z6 or just fix my motor. I think the problem on why it smogs bad is because it has low compression. Also If I were to do a swap with the same engine it's probably best if I get one with the tranny attached so all I have to do is pop it in right? Any imput would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well the tranny is attached and either way it all has to come out so you could spend the time and energy to utilize your old tranny by bolting it up to the new engine...thats what i would do..save the extra couple hundred bucks if you can get the motor alone! just my opinion... good luck

It'll definately be cheaper if you rebuild it but i guess it depends. If you take it out yourself and get it down to the lower half and bring it in to someone to have them rebuild it, it will be cheaper but if you have to pay someone to take it out, rip it apart, rebuild it, and then put the car back together it could get pricy and i couldnt tell you how much that would cost so couldnt compare it to a swap but could be more then a swap, you know?
But same thing for the swap; if you're going to rip the old one out and then have someone put in the new one, say no modifications, that would be cheaper then having someone do all of it but could be less then both options of rebuilding it. i guess i would start getting quotes from people capable of doing what it is you want. Then go from there! Hope that helps.

if your car is an automatic, it will be shorter time to swap the motor than to rebuild, but with one from an automatic, which would be easier than to convert a M/T motor to A/T.
(i know it sounds funny, but there's more complexity than I really know, something to do with there's a sensor or gear or something to change before you could swap a motor from M/T civic, to the A/T one)
if you're doing a motor swap with lower miles, direct replacement motor, why not swap the transmission to a low mileage one too? so you just get a JDM motor replacement, with the transmission, swap them both would be the best bet.
But if you were looking to save money, find yourself the same motor with the same transmission type, and just swap the long-block. (oil-pan up to the valve-cover)
that would cost 300-400, plus shipping, like 100-200 depending on how far from the west coast you are. get your motor from http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/
