my ecu got stolen last night and I have no clue which one I need, where do I find out the one I need? car is a 92 honda civic manual transmission.
also can I just buy a used one and (if it actually works) just plug up and go or do they have to have something speical done to them?

There are a few more details we need to know before we can pin it to a specific ECU type.
What trim level is your car? DX/LX/EX? Is your car JDM, USDM, or EDM? Or, do you know the engine code?
Easiest way is to look here on your engine and tell us what kind it is:
That's a pic I made for another thread, but your code will be in the same place. There is a square shaped area on the front of the block that you can easily recognize on any Honda engine. You may have to wipe engine grime off of it to read it. The code may be D16z6 or D15b7.
All you'll have to do is pick up a replacement of the same type and plug it in. As long as your car is stock and doesn't have any major aftermarket performance mods, such as a turbo, you'll be just fine.
The only thing you might want to do is let the car idle for about 15 minutes once the new ECU is in so it can make some calculations for your specific engine.

how do I know if my car is JDM, USDM, or EDM, I will look at the engine here in a min and get back to you on that, afaik its stock but one mechanic did tell me it was vtec, I never looked into it cause all I needed it for was work and back but I hear/read they use different ecu's

Where are you located? We have a couple of people from overseas, specifically Japan and Belgium, but most people here are from the United States or Canada. That's why I asked if it was USDM, JDM, or EDM. I'll assume USDM.
Because you say it's vtec, that makes me think you have the D16Z6 engine, so you'll probably need a P28 manual ecu. Its important to make sure it's a manual one because auto and manual ones are different. I'd like someone else to drop by this thread and confirm that for me, though.
