Default wiring neons/LED's

ok. so tomorrow, or today (depending on when you read this) im planning on makin my car glow. i wanna put neons or LEDs up under my dash to make the floor area in front of my seats glow.

first off. which is better to go with. neon or LED and why?

secondly. i have a switch and more 14g wire than i know what to do with. im buying the lights tomorrow.

i have a basic understanding of how to wire them up. basically wire goes from the power source to the switch, from the switch to the light and from the switch to a ground correct?

where is the best power source to tap into? and if i have my switch on the center console next to my e-brake (theres 4 cutouts there n im gunna put the switch in one of em) where is the best place to ground at?

one more thing too. the switch i bought says that i should always use an inline fuse. how does that work and do i need a relay for this setup?

if anyone has a few extra minutes and wants to give me sort of a step by step so i dont mess anything up that'd be great.

oh and diagrams are much much much appreciated.

thanks guys.

1st- LEDS are better then NEONS. Much brighter and have a longer life span.

Positive wire from switch to Positive terminal on battery. Positive wire from LEDS to secondary Positive terminal on switch. Then ground both Negative wires from both the switch and LEDS. Make sure you put a fuse about 6 inches from the battery running on the Positive Wire going into the switch that case if anything happens all you need to do is replace the fuse rather then replacing the car from fire damage.

Go directly to the battery and run one wire into the car. So if you ever wnated to add more Neons/Leds just tap into that exisiting wire so you don't have a million wires running in and out of your car.

Heres a simple diagram taken from Oznium.com forums. Check thouse out if you ever need more help.

Heres a nice DIY by a fellow forum member. Check this out as well for basics on wiring:

Have fun with it and take your time.

ok. so i bought my LED's today. but i have a problem.

they are prewired to hook up to a cig lighter. like this
<img src="http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...billy/led1.jpg" border="</a>

i have 12g wire to wire it up with like JLGuy said.

but all the wires that are coming out of the tube go intoa plug like this
<img src="http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...dconnector.jpg"</a>

and i believe that all the wires are 20g.

this plug goes into a controller shown here
<img src="http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...controller.jpg" </a>

and that controller is connected to the cig lighter plug.

what should i do? how do i get those 20g wires to splice together with my 12g wire?

an answer asap would be appreciated cuz i am looking to do this today. thanks guys.

LMFAO....
give me a break guys...... i just got off work alittle while ago.LOL

and with the cigarete lighter wires is what you need to tap into...
simply get a light tester and with the plug wired in probe into each wire.... thiers only the two... ones power and the other is ground... once your sure which wire is which simply put some tape around the ground wire just so you remember which wire is ground or power...
then simply cut off the cigerte plug... and once ya got all the lights sure which wire is power and which is ground... just twist em all together... grounds in one and power in the other.... then twist on your larger power wire that you have conected to the switch... and just be sure to fuse the power source !

or if your lazy you could always just conect all the wires into cig lighter plug again and just plug it in and out when ya want them lite.... ghetto but works if ya realy dont care!

my only concern with those pattern leds are tha twith multiple seperate units is that most the time they arent insink.... so while ones one pattern one way the other lights are changing slightly... long on... the further the paterns are different..

thats why i just like ozniums typical led strips....... buy to the size ya want and just twist em around where ya want. quick and easy....

OR if ya realy dont care about being ghetto just buy a bunch of cig lighter spliters LMFAO

just but em in nothing to them...
only bad thing about puting in those is ya need to remove the headlights from the car..... cause when ya drill into them to instal thiers those shavings that look realy bad if ya dont get them out after instaling the strobes..

first off, yeah LEDs are alot brighter than neons. I recommend htem, althoguh neons shine all over, and LEDs bascially shine in one direction, so you get hot spots sometimes (areas where light is brighter and you can tell where indivudal LED bulbs are)

second, i strongly suggest wiring into the fusebox under the driver side dash. Much more concealed and protect fomr the elements.

and as for that diagram, its really good, but if you have a switch with an LED on it, you will need to ground the switch as well (there will be a third prong). Swithces like this:
