you might check out your local pawn shop
where i live, our local pawn ship has some quality stuff for cheap prices, and it's not one of those place that rips you off
if you can find out about a pawn shop with a good reputation, check that out and see what they have. you never know what kind of stereo equipment you might find at your local pawn shop

well i think anything can be loud...its up to you. wether you just dont care about brand and just want a loud sound. quality has the best sound overall..you can find good quality for cheap at pawn shops..recommend.. but you need to first plan your whole set up. so that you can get the best sound out off your system. i would start by looking for amplifier anbd then subwoofers or subwoofers first so that you know what type of amp you need

Good luck with JL Audio as I seem to have a love/hate relationship with them. I love the 13w6v2 that is in my Mustang and I am ready to throw the two 10" JL Audio 10w3v2 subs that I have in my Civic in my trash can!
I have given the 10w3v2 subs anywhere from 400 watts to 1,000 watts RMS and I am just not satisfied with the frequency range they produce. Granted, the 10s are each in a .75 cubic foot sealed enclosure, and I am thinking of trying ported before I put them up for sale.

Porting it is. Good thing we are coming upon that part of the year where it is actually pleasant to be outside... If you had told me that I needed to build an enclosure in July or August, I would have sold these things in a heartbeat!
I guess I am just disappointed in the performance of the subs since all the local JL Audio fanboys rave about how great they are. Sorry, but these 10s suck in a sealed box. If I had paid full MSRP for these 10w3v2 subs, like the person I purchased them from, I would have been terribly disappointed.

ya im not a jl fan myself. only sub i would ever buy is the highest model and im sure as hell not gonna pay that much cash for one so ill never have one.LOL and no i dont like buying used subs because you never know about the previous owner unless he has some good rep for other subs hes sold like i have or used to have when i was buying and selling like a ****.LOL
lately ive been stuck on alpine type Rs 12s or 15s nothing smaller for me. only 10s i got are hooked up to my surround sound right now two 10inch REaudio RE subs in a ported box with a 300watt plate amplifier hooked up to them. they sound great but im really tempted to slap a 15inch type R to that amplifier in my room to really shake the walls.LOL
when i started out with stereos it was always sealed or a bandpass box if the subs came in the boxes. but after i built my first ported box i was hooked and ive never looked back on sealed! the bass from a ported box maybe alittle sloopier but not to much, tho the added volume you get is great! stick with 30-34hz for a good range. maybe 36hz. and the easiest ports to build are aero ports. very simple its just some tubing cut to size, glue it together and screw it to the box and your done!
i like the 3inch ports but now i see they have a 4inch port so i might try one of those out eventualy for my next box.
but a mdf slot port is definatly the cheapest to build
