some do some have a separate brain boxes. my alpine one in my truck is a 1 piece unit.
only downfall about a USED 1din flip out unit is alot of people or there friends like to touch or try to manually close the units or they dont install the units to clear the dash. my truck when i installed mine had interference with the dash when i first put it in.... i had to get a different dash kit to space it out some.
its very bad for there flip out motors and gears!!!! i stoped mine quickly but im sure it wasnt good for the unit.
basically im saying for the longest lasting unit.... buy it new. i bought mine from ebay for about 700-800 bucks.
if you look for a used one you can get it for 300-500bucks range. just be sure its a good brand! cheap name brand monitors suck! i used to buy cheap monitors and if you tilted your head slightly the picture would look all crazy from crappy viewing angles.

I have a Pioneer Avic-7000bt and love it. Got it off of Ebay for $450 brand new. Has everything except DVD playback. I keep wishing I went back and bought the Avic-9000bt (same thing, but with dvd playback) so I could throw in a Thomas the Tank Engine movie for my son when he doesn't feel like being in the car.
Wanna buy mine? lol
Edit - Whoops, just saw that you were looking for a single DIN. The Pioneers I listed above are both Double Dins.

hell no.... your not supposed to be able to on ANY UNIT LEGALLY!!!!!
but they do sell bypass kits. i have a bypass on my alpine unit that is automatic all the time. so i can watch dvds any time i want.
some people just use toggle switches to flick the ground code to the unit. but IMO just buy a bypass unit and let it do all the work.
