Bluetooth
Has anyone tried the cheap visor-mounted Bluetooth adapter sold at Walmart (VR3 model 120 something)? I want to talk hands-free in the car, I don't want one of those ear units (out on the street, I am not above holding the phone up to my ear so it is obvious I'm talking on the phone and not merely nuts). It seems like anything integrated into the stereo system is going to cost a bomb.
If I am going to integrate it with the stereo I need HD radio and Bluetooth on the same unit. I have a JVC KD-HDR1 now, which has built in HD radio and some sort of JVC expansion bus on the back.

i would just look for a new headunit with HD radio and bluetooth built in
go to like best buy or circuit city and just browse and see if you can find anything
as long as you don't get a DVD headunit you should be able to find one for less than 200.
oh and you can go pawn off your old headunit to get some money back afterwards

Thanks 315, I didn't see that, but looking further, the Crutchfield website says that unit will not work with the HDR1. It is only for certain later models that are "Bluetooth ready."
The only thing I've seen to get both functions in my price range (under $200) is a Dual XHD6425 plus it's $50 Bluetooth adapter. Seems like a downgrade in head unit in terms of brand, though it does also have the USB port I have wanted.

That was my impression too. I thought JVC was a rather cheesy brand but it has nothing on Dual. I bought the KD-HDR1 because at the time it was the only way to get HD for less than $300, and it has worked well so far.
The Dual does come with a "Dual" sticker, which when stuck on the outside of the car will remind thieves that they should look elsewhere.

if you want bluetooth and hd built in, for now you are out of luck. JVC is the only good brand that I know of that has a radio with built in HD, the HDR30, which is around 170 retail and you can get the bluetooth kit for 130.
also there are a couple of radios out there that have built in bluetooth but are only HD ready. Such as the Pioneer 7000BT, and the Kenwood BT838u. and then you would just have to buy the HD tuner seperate which usually run somewhere around 200.
Also all the brands come out with their new radios in January to February so you may considering just waiting to see if someone comes out with something that is exactly what you are looking for with both HD and Bluetooth
