technically, a channel isn't really how many speakers you can run.. because you can wire up many speakers to one channel. A channel is basically an individual signal. For example, a 2 channel sysstem (called stereo) has a left (channel 1) and right channel (channel 2). If i send sound to channel 1, only those speakers wired to channel 1 (left channel) will produce sound... this makes it possible to play one sound on the left side and one sound on the right side at the same time. If you only had 1 channel, you could not do this..

edit: also, when you hear DOLBY SURROUND SOUND... this is like 5 channels (i think).. the individual channels allow movies to play sounds on different speakers to give you the effect that some sounds are coming from behind you.. if you only had 1 channel, this would be impossible

Are you going to connect speakers to amp to or just the sub.

i am going to hook the speakers and subs to the amp. Can i put the front two speaker on 1 channel, and the back two on another channel? Also can i hook up 2 subs to 1 channel, or would two channels be best? So im looking at a 3-4 channel amp right?

3 channel amps. I newer saw one but I am sure if you look hard enough you'll find one. As to connecting 2speakers to one channel not a good idea. What kind of set up do you want for your car. Do you want to be heard in 1/4 mile radius or just clean nice base that isn't to f*** loud and does't make your whole car rattle. Whell for a good set up you probably want to get nice head unit Alpine and Pioneer seems to be favorites on this cite, but Sony is good to. All four aftermarket speakers, I am going with pioneers and one 12" sub or two if you really want a good base, Sony Xplode worked for me. And an amp for the subs do some research on that. I woudn't connect speakers to an amp but that is you choice, but if you do go with small 4channel amp.

depends how crazy you want to go with your system. If you have 2 subs you might want to get a capasitor that will give yo some more needed juice to drive your subs.

i just want it to sound like good quality. I dont want to be heard 3 blocks away, but i want it to be loud enough. If i hook up 4 speakers to the head unit, will they still sound good. I'm thinking infinity speakers with sony or pioneer.

yea that would be great set up. You don't need power you speakers with the amp in order for them to sound good. And I pearsonally newer had infinity speakers but I heard only good things about them.
